Three ways: 1. Hold down the mute button while starting up. 2. Lower the volume before shutting down. 3. Install the free StartupSound.prefPane extension.
A 4th option is to ask yourself why you are starting up your Mac at all. Put it to sleep and wake it up instead. See episode 240.

I have been trying to figure out how to set my computer so it doesn't make that loud "dada" on start up. I haven't been able to figure it out thanks.
