I’m editing a football highlight video and I want to add in a special character like an arrow to show a certain player on the field. How do I do that? thanks

  1. Sounds like you want to add a graphic overlay, not a character. You can do that with the picture-in-picture option. You just need to know how to make a semi-transparent image with something like Photoshop.
In episode 328 I show the technique for picture-in-picture but using custom titles as an example. http://macmost.com/custom-titles-in-imovie-09.html
You could use an arrow in the same way.

I tried this using inserting PNG objects but it kept crashing. I found another solution. Insert a title and delete the text…add a symbol or character instead of text.
    1. Insert Title
    2. Click “Show Fonts” Click left justify
    3. Click “Font Panel Actions” button (on left – looks like gear symbol)
    4. Select from a variety of arrow symbols.
    5. Use return and space bar to position the symbol where you want it.
