I would like to create a shortcut key (Z) in Firefox that when pressed I could go back to the previous page.

  1. You can use OS X’s ability to map a menu item to a keyboard shortcut for this. See episode 244: http://macmost.com/creating-custom-keyboard-shortcuts.html
In this case the menu command is History, Back. That already has the keyboard shortcut in Firefox of Command+[. At least in older versions it does.
Using just “Z” could be problematic. What if you are typing in a text field and need to use the letter z? It is always best to create keyboard shortcuts that won’t create conflicts like that. Maybe Command+Option+Z?
