MacMost Forum / Make a key type another character

I’m new to Mac. I’m living in Belgium and therefore I have a belgian keyboard on my iMac. Unfortunately there is no backslash “\” key on the keyboard, which is quite annoying for some applications.
Hopefully I can get it by using the Character Viewer in the System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Show Keyboard & Character Viewer in menu bar. It works but it’s very complicated. I was wondering, is there a way to change the behavior of some key system wide? For example, I have the “÷” key accessible through “alt :” which I don’t think I will ever use, can I replace this combination “alt :” to get my missing backslash?

    Sure. Check out the System Preferences, Language & Text, Text pane. Why not simply create a substitution. Perhaps typing ÷÷ converts automatically with a backslash.
    You could also try the Keyboard pane and simply switch your keyboard type.
    Or, see if there is another standard way to get the backslash using the Keyboard Viewer — just use it to see what the keyboard combination is. Maybe Shift+Option+/
