Newbie question — can these ringtones (for example, the Loud and clear ringtones) be used in the iphone for text messaging alerts?

Nope. Unfortunately, the SMS app in the iPhone doesn’t allow you to select a custom sound. A lot of people request this, but until Apple adds that as a feature to the SMS app, there’s no way to do it.
