Hi everyone, thanks for being here! My niece just got a Mac w/ OS X on it. She has no experience with this O/S. I am quite knowledgeable about windows but just starting to look into the Mac thing, so I can Dump Bill Gates! Is there a way I can set up her Mac to read windows mail and do I need to run anti virus on Mac?
All recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

You can read Windows mail (MSN or HotMail, I assume?) from the Web interface using Safari. But you can also configure Apple’s Mail program to fetch and send email. I’m sure they must have instructions on how to configure a POP/IMAP client like Mail to read it.
As for anti-virus, none of the current ones really “do” anything as there are no Mac viruses out in the wild to protect you from. Just keep your Mac up-to-date using the Apple software update tool and use common sense when online (don’t download and install anything you don’t trust).
When I got my mac it would not let me configure the mail app with my hotmail. It wasn’t till recently that windows live mail changed the way they operate and I was able to use the mail program. It will take you threw the process, and it is very easy. Just type in your email address and login info and it should automatically set it up for you.

Being a Mac-user since 1996, I can tell you that Mac viruses do exist, but in comparison to these for Windows, they are extremely few. In fact, the only things you should avoid are clicking untrusted links and dowloading any applications from untrusted sites. None of my friends who also use OS X have any anti-virus, the only protection you need is a good firewall, e.g. Protemac Netmine, that I am using myself.

But name a virus that is in the wild for Mac OS X in 2009.
