  1. With modern computers that have LCD screens (like iMacs, MacBooks, Apple Display — anything flat), you should always use the highest resolution. That is the native resolution for the display. For instance, 1366×768 means that it has exactly 1366 pixels across and 768 pixels vertical. So anything less would be blending pixels across the display and result in a not-so-sharp image.
    If that resolution makes text too small for you, there are many other ways to enlarge text (Episode 580: http://macmost.com/making-text-easier-to-read-2.html).
    “High Definition” is a TV/video term (not really a computer display term) and there are two types: 1280×720 (AKA 720p) and 1920×1080 (AKA 1080p). The 21.5-inch iMac I believe has a monitor that is exactly 1920×1080. But most other screens are at different sizes.
    The term “16:9″ refers to the ratio of horizontal pixels over vertical pixels. So 1920/1080 = 16/9.
