i was wondering if you know if the mini display port on the 27imac is capable of audio out like on the new macbooks because i want to connect my imac to my tv via mini to hdmi to watch films but dont want to buy an adaptor if its not capable of audio and video with one lead

I don't think it is. But I have no way of knowing other than checking the specs at the Apple site. They don't seem to mention it.
But if it isn't, then you have no choice. If you want to hook it up to your TV, then you need to have one cable that carries video and another to carry audio.
