I wanted to check and see if you had any recommendations on after market batteries. I have a 17 in powerbook.

Well, you get what you pay for. I'm using a 3rd-party battery in my old MacBook Pro right now. It was half the price. But it doesn't fit quite right, and the Mac doesn't seem to be able to sleep gracefully when the battery runs out. But other than that it is OK.
Just read reviews and keep in mind that if you pay less, you might get less.
