Ambient Light sensor on macbook pro 2011 13 inch

I bought a macbook pro recently and basically i was wondering how the ambient light sensor worked as I am not able to get it to work properly. Ive checked the box in settings that says “automatically illuminate keyboard in low light”. Ive tried turning off the lights in my room and nothing changes at all with the keyboard. Any ideas?

So if you are sure you have it turned on in preferences, then perhaps you have it simply turned down (or up, depending on how you look at it). Look on your keyboard for the keyboard light buttons. On my MacBook Air they are the alternates for F5 and F6. What happens if you press them? You may need to use the "fn" key and press them if you have your keyboard set to use those keys as F-keys instead of special function keys.
