Apple email “To Do” feature not working.

I’m using a MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.5 and associated mail version 4.4. I’m not able to make the “To Do” feature work.
I open an email, highlight a portion of the email I want to use for a “To Do” heading, but the “To Do” icon will not highlight in order for me to click on it. The “Notes” icon is highlighted & click enabled, but not the “To Do” icon.
Is there something I’m not doing?

What happens when you try to view/edit your to do list in iCal? To Do is really a feature of iCal that was extended into Mail. My guess is that you may not have a calendar set up or something like that. See what happens once you create a to do item in iCal.

    Gary,
I set up an iCal calendar and it shows a "To Do" listing on the right hand side of the iCal calendar, but still not able to create a To Do with my email.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you,

My next thought is that it has to do with you Mail account somehow. I know Notes "belong" to IMAP accounts, for instance. Perhaps there is something in the type of Mail account you are using, or the way it is set up.
BTW, what happens when you try to select File, New to Do. Is that grayed out too?
I'll be interested to know if you find a solution.

When I select File, the New To Do is grayed out as well. I'll keep tinkering with this and see what I can come up with. My hunch tells me there's something simple I'm overlooking. I may call the local Apple store and visit with them about it. I'll keep you posted as I go along.

    Thank you

    Gary,
I wanted to let you know I ended up calling Apple Tech Support about the "To Do" issue I've been having. Long story short is the tech walked me through a numer of steps setting up false email accounts and attempting to make To Do work in that fashion. We cleared cache memory and things of that nature and after a little over an hour on the phone, he was stumped and was not able to make To Do work. He's going to raise the issue with his senior engineers get back to me this week, or as soon as they can figure it out. We tried linking the new addresses with my me.com account and it still didn't work. The guy was good to work with, definitely knew his stuff, but couldn't get it to work. He was baffled.
Just wanted to let you know and as soon as I hear anything I'll report it to you.
    Thanks,
    Bob P.
