i just purchased a new Imac with quad core I5 2.7. my problem is when i was compressing my movies in apple tv2 mode with Handbrake it would take an average of 15minutes. about two weeks into owning the Imac it now all of the sudden takes 35-45min. any ideas of what happened

Not sure. Have you downloaded the latest version of Handbrake? They have a 64-bit version now.
Could simply be the video you are working with.
Could be some setting changed.
Very hard to tell without being there to see every setting and investigate.
