Changing Alias icons on the desktop

Is there a way to use a jpeg or other image as the icon for an alias on the desktop?

Absolutely. Just open up the image you want to use in any image program -- preview ill probably do. Then select and copy the portion of the image you want to use.
Then select the alias and choose File, Get Info. See the icon at the upper left corner of the Info window? Select it and paste.
