Gmail – ghost message

Upgraded to Lion. My Gmail inbox, one of many inboxes, shows I have one unread message and 42 messages in the trash. Both the Gmail inbox and trash are empty. Where are those pesky messages. Hmmm… Went to Gmail.com and cleaned everything out – new, sent, spam, trash, all of it. Deleted the Gmail account on my Lion machine. Set up new Gmail account (old ID and PW) and there the ghosts are again – 1 in the inbox, 42 in trash. Do not have this problem on my Snow Lep machine. Ideas?

Perhaps you have another account in addition to the Gmail account set up in Mail? So the total is 1 and 42, even though Gmail is 0 and 0. I do this all the time when I see I have 1 incoming message and it shows 0. Turns out I've selected to only see my mail account's inbox, and the message is in the inbox of another account.
If not, what happens when you quit Mail and restart?

Same thing after quitting and restarting Mail. I even killed my Gmail account and started from scratch. Still have the ghost messages - 1 in the inbox and 42 in Spam. It's odd when Mail tells me "0 messages, 42 unread"! This is an annoyance more than a real problem.

This issue doesn't happen on my SL machine using the exact same account settings, which makes me think it has something to do with Lion Mail.
