every time I insert my company logo as picture in picture in imovie, I am first forced to change the crop to fit because it cuts off the edges.
When I do this all of a sudden my picture isn’t cropped anymore and has a black box around it, how do I have my logo fit the screen and have no black around it?

The trick is to make the image the same ratio (16:9 or 4:3) as your video project. Then you won't need to use "Fit."
gary,
i do adjust the image to the same ratio in preview. but then the image is all stretched out and looks messed up. how can i adjust the images ratio without stretching the image out.
Crop it instead of stretching it. Or, add solid color (or transparency) behind it. So if you have a 1000x720 graphic, then put it in a 1280x720 image, with 140 of extra on each side.
Having a bit of trouble with iMovie. I have iMovie 09 v. 8.0.6 and it will not let me use the picture on picture option even though I have seen other people do it with the same software..
what is preventing you? Is there an error message? Something else? Have you tried with a simple example (picture over single video clip, no other effects).
