How Do I Get Rid Of “Java Command Line Update” Pop-up After Sierra Upgrade?

Since upgrading to Sierra, I regularly have a pop-up window: “To use the ‘java’ command-line tool you need to install a JDK. Click ‘more info’ to visit the Java Developer Kit download website.”

But I am not a developer. I have tried turning Java on and off in Safari preferences. This pop-up continues to arise 10-20 times per day. I can get rid of it by clicking on “OK” but it is annoying.

What’s wrong?

Sounds like you have installed Java in the past, perhaps for something you needed. But since then there has been an update, or perhaps some other app you have used has changed Java.
You can re-install Java by going to this Apple page:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572
That should fix the issue you are experiencing.

Gary, I had spent a week dealing with this pop-up ... visiting the Java site mentioned in the pop-up, downloading something, fiddling with the Java check box in Safari preferences ... all to no avail. I pose the simple question here, and, voilà, you give me a link, a download, and it has gone away! Thank you.

And it has not appeared once in the last 5 days!
