I accidentally deleted my bookmarks folder from Safari. This included hundreds of bookmarks. When trying to restore from Time Machine (backed up 2 hours earlier), I get the message “Safari can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.
Steps were:
1 Open Safari or highlight in Applications folder
2 Enter Time Machine
3 Find most recent backup
4 Hit Restore
I have the bookmarks on an iPad but am afraid that syncing would delete them from the iPad rather than adding them back to Safari.
Using most recent versions of Lion and Safari.
Any suggestions?

It sounds like you are trying to restore Safari, the application. The bookmarks are not store inside the application.
Instead, try restoring User/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
I am having the same problem (thanks to ICloud I deleted the bookmarks off one computer and thought I set it not to sync to the others). I need to restore my bookmarks in Time Machine. When I go to User/Library I don't see Safari in the list. I've checked a million times. Now what.
That's odd. There definitely needs to be a Safari folder in your user Library folder -- check again. If you use Safari at all, it must be there. Maybe you are looking in the wrong Library folder? It is the one you get to by choosing the Go menu with the option key held down. NOT the one at the root hard drive level.
