Since upgrading my iPhone 4 and iPad 1 to iOS 5 I’ve had duplicate/triplicate calendar entries show up. What is the best way to remove them?

Check first to see if they really are duplicates. It may just be that you now have old calendars and your new iCloud calendar all showing at the same time. For instance, you could be syncing your calendar from your Mac, subscribed to the MobileMe version and also the iCloud version and see the same events all three times.
In that case, the solution is to simply remove the MobileMe version from your iPhone and stop syncing any other versions.
