I’m new to iMovie 11. I want to scroll credits over a still image, so that the background of the credits is transparent and shows the image behind ’em. Can I do that?

That's pretty much how the scrolling credits titles in iMovie work. Just drag scrolling credits over the clip you want to place it over, and you'll have it. Then just edit the text and stretch the time.
Now episode 611 goes way beyond that. But you might still find it useful just to see how it works.

Wow, what a great site. I looked at the tutorial, and it's given me a couple of good ideas, but...what I really want to do is have the credits scrolling over a fixed image, so that the background of the scrolling image is transparent. Clues?
Just put a photo there and drag and drop the scrolling credits over it.
when I lengthen the clip to accommodate the scrolling text, it still scrolls by super fast, then leaves me with many seconds of still image on the screen.
what am i doing wrong?
Perhaps you are not lengthening the right part? Select it and then look at the info for it. The duration time should be there. Set a new duration.
