How do I set a universal keyboard shortcut for iTunes?

I have a new keyboard and it doesn’t seem to have a universal function key for play/pause in iTunes. How do I set one? Like F8 or F15 or whatever.

So you are saying that you have a non-Apple keyboard, one that doesn't include the iTunes shortcuts?
That will be tough. You can't just make a shortcut for iTunes, because it would be an application-base shortcut, so it will only work while you are using iTunes as your front-most app.
You could probably build services using Automator, then apply keyboard shortcuts to those. But that would be a lot of work.
You might just have to live without these.
There may be a third-party keyboard shortcut utility that does this, but I don't know off-hand.

I need to use the standard function keys on my apple keyboard which takes away the ability to hit the play/pause button for iTunes (unless I hold down the fn key). Is there a way to do it while the keyboard is in standard fn keys (even if it's complicated)?

So why not toggle it so they work as function keys by default, and you need to use the fn key to use the controls. Will that solve your problem?
