I have edited pictures in iPhoto and want to upload that version with captions to something like Picasa in order to share with family and friends. How and through what service can this be done?

You mention Picasa. Why not use that?
There is also the well-known Flickr site (Picasa is Google and Fickr is Yahoo).
There are other major competitors in that realm as well: PhotoBucket, Shutterfly, Snapfish etc.
Just look around a them and see which fits your needs.
I've used Flickr before, and there is the Share, Flickr menu item in iPhoto 11.
For Picasa, they have an iPhoto extension that adds Picasa to the File, Export menu.
But all of these can be used through their web interfaces.
The issue is that i have EDITED photos in iPhoto, but the edits do not load to any site I have found. If you know a way to upload the corrected images, please let me know. (I prefer Picasa..)
"Export" your edited file to local (or other) disk - then upload?
Picasa can be a little finicky. iTunes a little more intuitive. A file is a file - you can move it anywhere, but the "free" services Gary mentions all have their foibles. (plus - some seem to have a tendency to go south - like Kodak and 35mm film.)
Thanks for those thoughts...LOL. Guess I'll stick with the 'free' one and try your suggestion. I couldn't get out of the box with anything like your idea. Thanks to you both.
