I used to click on my mail message and see it displayed below.
I don’t know how to get it back. I guess I need to do something in the View but I’ve tried everything and don’t know why it is not working.

I'm guessing that you simply lost the view pane of the mail Mail window. There's the sidebar (left), the toolbar (top) and then the majority of space is split between the list (top) and view (bottom).
You can adjust the division of space between the list and view by dragging the divider in between them. It slides up and down.
If you slide it all the way down, then the view space disappears. But the divider is still there. Look all the way at the bottom and you'll see it, with a dot in the middle to indicate that you can "grab" it. Just grab that divider and slide it up.
