I watched your podcast last night and was happy to discover the character view feature. I use 10.7.5, my wife’s Mac is 10.6.7 and she doesn’t have that icon in the menubar. Is there a way to get it or is it not available in snow leopard?
thank you in advance

It is there in Snow Leopard too. But the System Preferences pane looks a little different.
Go to System Preferences, Language & Text. Then click on Input Sources. At the top of the list to the left you will see a checkbox for "Keyboard & Character Viewer." Turn that on and the menu bar icon will appear just as it does in Lion and Mountain Lion.
Gary,
I can't seem to make emoji work on pages 4.2 on osx 10.7.5
It doesn't work in word either, although I didn't expect it to in a MS app.
Yes, that's right. It doesn't work quite everywhere. Pages and Word on Mac don't support this special font.
