I frequently hear email notifications on my Mac and iOS devices, only to find nothing new in my inbox. Upon investigation, they are emails automatiCally designated as junk or trash per a rule I set up. Is there a way to not hear the notification sound for junk and trash emails?

How To Turn Off Notification Of Non-inbox Items?

So on the Mac, you can turn of audio notifications by going to Mail, Preferences, General. And then set the New messages sound to "None."
Then you can create some rules that result in the action of playing a sound. So assuming you use the "stop evaluating rules" action on all of the previous rules, you can then have a final rule that has the action "play sound."
On iOS I dont' think there is much you can do.
