iMovie Upload to External Drive

I use iMovie’s latest version on my iMac7.
A week ago, I decided to upload my movies through iMovie from my camera to an external drive.
When the drive (non-apple) was connected and it showed on the desktop, iMovie would not allow me to select it. This has left me with the following questions:
1. Is there a setting I need to change in Preferences?
2. Must I use an Apple only drive?
3. Is this because I have an older iMac with USB only?

It is simply because it is a USB drive. It is too slow of a connection to use for video editing and the like. So instead of giving you horrible performance and having you cursing iMovie, it simply doesn't allow you to use an external USB drive.
Firewire drives will work. Internal drives, or those connected like internal drives (eSATA card in my Mac Pro, or Thunderbolt in newer Macs) will work.
