When you get Photos, which I assume you already have, then you'll see that you have both apps. So you can still use iPhoto. When you run Photos for the first time it will copy and convert your iPhoto library to Photos. So you have both.
You can still then run iPhoto and access your old iPhoto library. But new photos added to Photos will only be in the new library, not the old. Likewise, adding photos to iPhoto will not change your Photos library.
