Is iTunes Helper in login needed

hi, on the mac in login items there is ituneshelper, someone told me that it isnt needed so I took it away, Is it needed? When I connect my iphone I see that itunes doesnt automatically open anymore, Is that the only thing I need it for? And how do I get it back if I want it back? I tried looking for it to put it back but I cant find it. I would appreciate your help
thanks

iTunes helper basically does what you surmised: it looks for you to plug in your iPod or other device and launches iTunes if you have that setting selected. But it may do more than that. I have seen hints that it may help iTunes in other ways. It is a small process that uses hardly any power, so I don't recommend removing it.
To add it back, find your iTunes application in the Application folder. Select it and right+click to choose "Show Package Contents." Then look in Resources for iTunesHelper.app. Drag that back into your Login Items list in your System Preferences, Accounts.

I know this is old, but it says in my Login Items that iTunesHelper couldn't be found... I just updated iTunes.

It's not in resources anymore...do this:
open finder, click on "applications", right click on Itunes and select "show package contents". Once in there, click on "Mac OS" instead of "resources". You'll see Itunes Helper and you can drag it into your login Items.

    I would try re-installing iTunes. http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
