when I try to export an updated version of a movie (with new name), it is not showing up on the thumb drive, though iMovie ’09 reads that it is exporting the file. Thoughts?

It sounds like a permissions issue. iMovie will do all the work of an export, but just not produce a file, when there is a permissions issue.
Make sure you have permission to write to that folder on that drive.
Or, just export to your desktop and then try copying the file there.
