Older Mac has Firewire 400 New Ext Hard Drive is 800

I would like to connect a newer external hard drive to my iMac using Firewire. The new drive only has a 800-800 cable. Can I purchase a 400-800 firewire cable and will it work? I see plenty of people using them for connecting a newer mac with an 800 firewire to a 400 firewire device, but I would like to do the reverse. It will be faster than USB if it does work, correct?

Yes, it is supposed to work. You should be able to go in either direction. But I've never tried it.
