So is it just that they aren't showing up on your desktop, or they aren't showing up anywhere.
Bu default they shouldn't show up on your desktop, but will shop up in several other places including the left sidebar of any Finder window.
If you want them to appear on the Desktop go to the menu Finder, Preferences and then select the General tab. There you can select which items to show on your desktop.

    Hello again Gary,
I went to Finder and did what you suggested to no avail. They don't show anywhere, that I am aware of. Any kind of help is kindly appreciated. Thx for laughing.

Not even in the Finder sidebar? How about running Disk Utility? Do they appear then? Keep in mind the optical drive won't show anything unless you have a disc in there. The USB drive may not show if it is formatted some way that Macs can't read (unformatted, or NTFS)

I have 2 optical drives: one has ILife11 and the other some Mac software. Even in disk utilities they don't show. Oh, I forgot I also a usb Mac formatted. I went to general TAB on the Finder and checked all everything
Again thanks for taking a time.

What happens when you use the menu item Go, Computer. Do you see them then?
