I used someone else’s printer because mine was out of ink. Now when I use software update, it wants to give me an HP printer update (the printer I used once). I do not care for this update nor do I need it. Is there a way to get the HP update to stop appearing in Software Update, or should I just download it to make it disappear (or in case I ever borrow the printer again)?

Just select the update in Software Update, then look in the menu bar. Should be Update, Ignore Update.
Of course it doesn't hurt to install the update. If you used an HP printer once, it could happen again. Might as well stay updated.
