In which view? In List view, you would just click on the Name title at the top of that column. Click again to reverse the sort. Make sure you don't have any arrangement set or it may not work as you expect (View, Arrange By, None).
In Icon view use View, Clean Up By, Name. This will re-arrange all the icons to sort them by name.
In Column view, it is always by name. But if you have View, Arrange By set to something besides None then you will get everything grouped.

In column view, my finder will not sort by name even when I ask it to.

First, are you sure you have View, Arrange By set to "None."
If so, then how is it sorting? If not by name, then what?
