WD external drives format before use

I have three Western Digital external drives before use what format should I use. Or should they be reformatted. I have a Quad core L7 iMac.

You should definitely reformat before using a new drive. Chances are, if they are pre-formatted that they are formatted for Windows, not Mac. The standard for Mac would be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."
But, if you plan on using a drive to transfer files between Mac and Windows computers, you should use FAT 32 instead.
