Which is the fastest way to transfer photos from a compact flash card?

I am a photographer looking for the fastest way to transfer photos from my compact flash card to my MBP ( Thunderbolt version). I am ready to purchase a firewire 800 card reader but have heard that a PCI card adapter ( for the slot on my MBP) is faster.
which is the fastest?
Any help would be appreciated.

The PCI card should be faster. Of course, a poorly designed PCI card might be slower. The thing is that a PCI Express card, Firewire card, or USB 2 card will all be very fast.
So it is a Compact Flash card, not an SD card? Because the MacBook Pro should have an SD slot built into the side. That would be fast (fastest?)
Any of these options would be faster than attaching the USB cable to the camera and transferring that way. I find that is by far the slowest. At least on the cameras I have used.
