In the last couple months, when I try to add a new bookmark, Safari only asks me if I want to “add to Reading List”. I don’t! How can I make new Bookmarks now? I work on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8.

Why Does “Add Bookmark” Now Go To “Reading List”?

How are you adding the bookmark? If you go to Bookmarks, Add Bookmark you will get a dialog box which allows you to add the current page to part of your bookmarks. The first item there is a pull-down menu. You should be able to add to your Reading List, Bookmarks bar, or any bookmarks folder using that pop-up menu. Reading List is the first item but you should see the rest too if you click it.
Perhaps you have Top Sites turned off and no bookmarks folders?
You can go to Bookmarks, Show All Bookmarks and should be able to add folders there if that is the case.
When I drop down the Bookmark menu and click on Add Bookmark, I get a dialog box that says "Add to Reading List" instead. Top Sites is on. What is the mechanism in Show All Bookmarks to add a new Bookmark?
What are the first few items in your Bookmarks menu? They should be:
Show All Bookmarks
Add Bookmark...
Add Bookmarks for These Tabs
Add Bookmark Folder
----
Add to Reading List
etc...
Do you not have the first four items?
If you do, then select Add Bookmark, the second one.
The first thing in the dialog should be "Add this page to:" and then a pop-up menu. That pop-up menu may be set to "Reading List" but if you click it you can select something else.
I have the same problem as Jo. When I select "Add Bookmark" I am diverted straight to the "Add to Reading List" option.
I have the same problem. Going to the Bookmark item and selecting Add Bookmark only gets me a Reading List option. What is going on?
Choose Bookmarks, Add Bookmark. Then take a very careful look at the dialog that comes up. The top entry allows you to specify where you put that bookmark. It sounds like you have it set to "Reading List." Simply select another option there.
