If you want to turn off your screen fast you can activate display sleep with a keyboard combination. Shift+Control+Eject will do it. If you have a MacBook Air without an eject key, the power key in the upper right corner will work. Then press any key to turn the screen back on.

I tried this on MacBook Air (Shift +Control+PowerButton) and it did not work. Also what is the key combo on iMac using a Microsoft ergo keyboard (7000)?
Not sure why it isn't working for you. Not sure about that keyboard as I don't have one -- might be no way to do it. Experiment.
shift+control+eject?? where is the eject button?:S
On many Mac keyboards it is above the delete key. If you have a MacBook Air, there is a power button there -- works the same way.
