I want to disagree with the idea that college students would use Macs due to the better laptops. The number one problem with this is that, at least at my college, there was always at least one piece of software I needed that was Windows only. Be it Office, some compiler, etc. (Yes, I was a comp. sci. student.)
I think what you are noticing is that people that tend to use their computers for more than just checking e-mail and web browsing are switching away from Windows. I work in a software company, and I'm hearing people daily talking about switching to Linux or Mac. In fact, there's really only been one reason for people to stay... games.
Another factor that you are forgetting are business computers. Most businesses are still entrenched in Windows.
