How Do I Set Up Unique FaceTime Accounts On My Kid’s iPods?

My son (9) and my daughter (6) both received an iPod Touch for Christmas. We set them both up under my wife’s iTunes account, for app and video sharing.
The problem is that when we use FaceTime, both iPods are showing up as my wife (and trying to connect with her iPhone and both iPods when we attempt to call one of the kids). How do we set each iPod up with a unique FaceTime identity and still keep them under my wife’s account?

Take a look at your FaceTime settings in the Settings app on your iOS devices. You can specify email addresses to use for identifying the person using the device. So just add a unique email address for each person. Get a free one from Gmail or some other place if you don't have one set up for the kids. Maybe not even their email addresses, but alternative ones for you (like mylastnamefacetime01@gmail.com).
Then just use those email addresses to make and complete FaceTime calls.

Thanks for the assistance. That worked for one of the iPods, but the second one is giving me an error when trying to validate the added email address. Any thoughts as to what might be causing that?

No, sorry. Try another email address, maybe? Or just try it again later.

Can this be done with iMessage as well??

Yes. Look at the Messages settings. You'll see.

I did this, but it is still linked to my iTunes account and will not let me change it to the new email address for each child... How do I fix this?

You don't change the iTunes account address. You set up the email address as a way to contact that device. They would all have the same iTunes account address since you have only one account. But they would then each have a different email address used to do facetime.
