AirPrint Disappoints, But Developers Find Solutions

One of the major new features of iOS 4.2 is AirPrint, the ability to print directly from your iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately, this only works if you have one of the small group of HP printers that supports it. That makes it a non-feature for most people.
But in the future we hope that Apple allows you to print through your Mac. After all, you can print from one Mac to a printer connected to another Mac. So why not extend that functionality to AirPrint?
In the meantime, third-party developers have come up with solutions. Ecamm has a $10 application that solves the problem and is packed with features. Printopia will even allow you to save a document to your Mac as a PDF through AirPrint. There is also the $8 FingerPrint application. A free, but less elegant, alternative is the basic AirPrint Hacktivator.

Print Central for iPad works beautifully. It can identify most wifi printers in seconds and allows you to print documents, photos, email and web pages with ver little effort. This is the app which should have been included in 4.2. You can also use your Mac or Pc to print from a network printer using WePrint which can be downloaded to your Mac or PC

Ecamm's Printopia fills the bill. Feature packed and gets around having to purchase a new printer.

Wonder why Airprint was changed after the developer build to not include support for printers already in the field.
