The iPhone stocks application is a simple app that displays the current stock price of a list of stocks that you provide.
iPhone Stocks
The main screen shows the stock symbol, the current price, and the relative change for the day. Red is used to indicate a falling price, green to show a rising price. The chart at the bottom of the screen shows graph of the stock price for the selected stock. Pressing the i button at the bottom right of the screen will bring up the list of stocks you are tracking so you can edit them. You can click on the button to the left of the stock to delete it from your list. You can also click on the % or Numbers buttons on the bottom to choose to display a percentage of change, rather than actual dollars per share value.
You can re-arrange the stocks by pressing and dragging the right end of the stock line up or down.
iPhone Stocks Edit
To add a stock, press on the + button at the top of the screen. You can then type the symbol of the stock or the stock name and it will look up the stock symbol for you.

To add the Dow Jones Industrial Average, use ^DJI. The Nasdaq is ^IXIC. The Standard and Poors Index is ^GSPC.

Is it possible to change the way the name of the stock is displayed i.e. from IXIC to NASDAQ?

  2. peter says:

I would like to add non us stocks e.g. stocks listed on londin stock exchange, but no joy. Any ideas on how this can be done?

  3. rosenz says:

peter: I just tried adding one and it worked: “RDSA.L” This is a Yahoo application, so anything you enter into Yahoo Finance should work.

    • Jeff says:

Not all stocks will be listed by Yahoo for example Goldcorp on NYSE (GG) will but not Goldcorp on TSX (G)in fact Yahoo doesn’t even know it exists it offers multiple chinese variants. I just drop the app and go with a private listing provider they are free as well.

  4. Peter schnitzler says:

Is it possible to add mutual funds such as AGF china focus class from canada. I know the code (agu*chi) but the application can’t find anything.

  5. rosenz says:

drmarkz: The stocks app pulls its data from Yahoo. So if you figure out how to refer to the stock in Yahoo, then it should work in the stocks app. However, there are also many good third-party apps that show stocks too.

  6. aeiseman says:

Is there any way to remove the graph? I just want the list with the numbers.

  7. rosenz says:

aeiseman: No, there really aren’t any options. It is a simple app. If you want something more custom, you may want to find a Web site that shows stocks like you want, and then create an icon bookmark for that Web site.

  8. aeiseman says:

    Thank you!

  9. John says:

Is there a way to remove this ap? I do not need it

  10. rosenz says:

John: No, you can’t remove the built-in apps, at least not yet. But you can move it to the last screen to get it out of your way.

The default stock app is for amateurs ….

Have you guys checked out PortfolioLive? I use it each and every day to track 3 of my portfolios (45 stocks in total). It is super easy to use, has advanced Portfolio management features (like shorts, multiple lots, cash). The devs are also releasing updates very frequently …

Oh and it has an awesome real-time stock engine … you can barely see the little communication icon go off. No charts but there is no easier way to check your stocks while at line at the deli.

  12. vhilts says:

I’d like to get spot gold and silver prices from this application, not a separate webpage. One poster suggested using “xauusd” for gold but that does not work. I’ve searched yahoo since I understand the iphone app uses yahoo’s stock engine but haven’t found any symbols that give spot gold and silver prices.

    Any suggestions?

    • It is just a matter of finding the Yahoo stock code for those things. Whatever works in Yahoo finance should work in the app. I don’t know what they would be, though.

    • Looks like gold may be ^YHOh714 and silver may be ^YHOh715
I found them by searching for “gold prices yahoo” and then getting to a Yahoo “Industry Center” page, and then clicking on the “Gold” link to go to a regular finance page which used the code. Same for Silver.

    • Moe says:

You need to put it exactly as “XAUUSD=X”…ie all the characters between the quotes. I think you just missed out on the =X part. This works for me. I also use XAGUSD=X for silver.

    • mert says:

      try –> xauusd=x
as a matter of fact, for all currency pairs, you should add =x to the end
      such as:
      eurusd=x
      works just fine!

  18. Dw says:

I’m missing the current price and the relative change in my version and I have no recollection of ever seeing them and can’t find any option to alter it.
Is there a way for me to get them back?

    • Try clicking on the “i” button at the bottom of the screen and then playing with the settings at the bottom of the next screen. You could always get a better 3rd-party stocks app from the App Store too.

  19. jack daubert says:

Can you get this app on the ipad?

  20. Phil Turner says:

The App displays totally random graphs for BP shares when selecting 1week or 1 day graph options.
If it can’t display simple operations such as this, how can one trust this app for displaying any data reliably.
This is an Apple standard phone app and shoul operate as part of the phone .

I just got a new iPhone and want to transfer my old iPhone stock list on it. Any idea where the list of watched stocks is stored or backed up so it can be put on a new device?

    • I’m pretty sure there is no way to do it. That’s an old pre-app store app that doesn’t have much functionality. If you have that many stocks, you may want to look into a better stock-tracking app. There are so many.

Charts for a particular stock are wrong 99% of the time. This has been going on for several months at least. Sometimes it shows wrong date, sometimes wrong price, etc… Any thought on where I can report this bug.

Stock in question is CGY.DE thought I assume the issue is more widespread than this single issue.

  48. Janet says:

My iphone wasn’t working right, so I got a new one under warranty. Now, the stock page just shows a – beside the stocks instead of a number and it shows 2.05B beside one of them, instead of whether it is up or down. Do I need to do something to this new phone to get the up or down piece to work or what does those codes mean?

  49. Vivian says:

My 4S iphone stock app has a MarketWatch list of headlines below the list of stocks. Since March 3, 2012 the headlines have not updated except for a couple of times when current headlines suddenly appear and then a quickly replaced with the ones from Mar. 3. I have tried the soft resent to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks

  50. INSCOP says:

When I add or delete a stock from my iPhone using the standard app, it does the same action to my wife’s phone and vice versa. We do not share other things like pictures, texts or anything else that I know of. Any ideas other than just love each other’s stocks? I just added AMED and she is at work and it changed on her phone as well, so proximity apparently has nothing to do with it.

  51. Jane says:

One of my favorite functions of this ap is when it is landscape mode and you touch two different points on the graph, it shows you the gain or loss between those two dates. Does anyone know of an iPad ap that does that as simply. I checked yahoo finance and it doesn’t as far as I can figure out.
