If you’re in Text Edit, did you know that you can use Services to look up a word in the Dictionary?

Simply highlight the word, Select the Text Edit menu, choose Services, then click Look Up In Dictionary. There’s your definition. Explore the Services menu to find a variety of time-saving tools which vary within each application.
