My Mac has El Capitan and all updates. I am trying to open a zip file without any success. I have used my various search engines with this request with no luck.

All you need to do is to double-click a zip file to extract the contents. Did you do that? If so, what was the result? Was there an error message? Something else?
Perhaps this is simply a bad zip file. Create your own zip file to test by simply Control+clicking any file you have and selecting Compress. Then double-click it is extract. If that works and the other file doesn't, then it sounds like a bad file. Maybe it difn't fully download (or upload or send) or maybe it isn't really a zip file at all, just something someone renamed to look like a zip file.
Hi Gary, I followed your suggestion and made my own zip file. When double clicked it this is the message I received.
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC could not open 'Preach Schedule Sept 2013 to April 2014 Lee 9-5-13.numbers.zip' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
It sounds like somehow you have assigned Reader to open zip files. The unarchiver app should open them. Try Control clicking on the zip file and choosing open with and then selecting unatchiver instead.
