Hey gary I recently bought a Airport Extreme and I am wanting to connect a network drive to it using the USB port. I know this can be done, but I am curious as to if I can back up that “network drive” using time machine that is physically connected to my iMac. Currently I use an external HDD to back up both my iMac and my “media drive”. I am wanting to connect that “media drive” to my Airport Extreme and wonder if time machine will continue backing that “media drive”. Thanks

I'm not sure. You would have to make sure the remote drive was mounted on your Mac, of course. Then, you may also have to tell Time Machine to keep backing it up by adding it in the options.
I think the quickest way to find out would be to try it. It should be easy to test.
But keep in mind that the speed of the backup would be much much slower, as the files would have to transfer over the network instead of just over USB.
