I have a bunch of files in mkv format and some in avi format. I wish to burn them to a dvd but not as a data dvd… a dvd video format disc where each of the files can be separate menu items to click and play. How do I go about it? I have Toast 10 and IDVD.

First, try creating a DVD with Toast. It may work. Not sure if it supports those formats.
If not, then just use a program like MPEG Streamclip to convert them to something normal like a h264 .mp4 file. Then use either iDVD or Toast to make the DVD
