Once I configured Gmail as Ms Exchange on my iPhone… I could get to a new message, type a few characters of the Name of the recipient and the Email address showed up.
The same does not happen in Lion Apple Mail because It is not set up with Ms Exchange. So do i need to Import the Gmail address book into Apple Address Book for the same to happen ?

Right. Mail doesn't know about Gmail address book. It is on the server, and Mail has no access to it.
You can import those addresses into Address Book if you like.
I simply use the Mac Address Book, and not the Gmail contacts list. Since I rarely use the Gmail web interface, that's the way to go for me.
You may want to try playing around with adding Gmail as an account in Address Book (see Preferences). There are several account types, and none of them are "Gmail" -- but maybe some experimentation may get it working.
But if i Import all my GMAILEMail addressees to my mac address book, won't so many email addressees be saved and get mixed up with my iPhone contacts too which are phone numbers ? Problems of Duplicate names might occur too that way !
Yes.
that is when i sync my iPhone !
