I am a teacher and use my iPad for presentations. Sometimes I need to use my password to log in on the intranet. Is there a way to switch off the characters so that my students only see the dots on the screen?

I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to prevent it. Well, other than simply turning off the projector or disconnecting the iPad for the few seconds it takes to enter the password. I guess another option would be to change your password just after the presentation.
I hope that Apple addresses this at some point. I would send your feedback (http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html). I'm sure if enough people send in that same complaint that they will eventually change it.
I'm amazed at how when you search the net for this problem there are so many "who cares" and "this is no big deal" responses from people. Lots of people present now with the iPad, and some of us (me) record videos or even do live streaming videos from the iPad. This is definitely an issue.
Aha! If you have the forethought to copy your password to the clipboard you can paste it in. This prevents any of the letters from showing up and also prevents the on-screen keyboard keys from highlighting as you type. A better solution is definitely needed, but this seems to work on my iPhone, at least for the Apple ID password prompts.
