Somehow I have an icon of a hard drive named Macintosh HD on my desktop…… I do not know how it got there but can I delete it?

So that's your Mac's hard drive. It has all of your files, macOS, your apps, everything. You definitely don't want to delete that.

The Desktop, in addition to containing files you put in your Desktop folder, can also show internal and external hard drives. But it doesn't have to. If you'd rather not have an icon there that you can use to access the top level of your hard drive, it is easy to turn off that feature.

In the Finder, go to Finder, Preferences. Then in General, look for the checkboxes under "Show these items on the Desktop." Uncheck the ones you don't want. In this case the "Hard Disks" one is the one you want to turn off.
