Gary,
I am using a Mac Pro 1st generation with OS 10.5.8. I almost always use finder in the list view. I don’t know what happened but my list order has reversed itself on it’s own and I can’t seem to change it back to the way I had it. The “arrange by” under “view” has always been greyed out so that I have never been able to access the “arrange by” catagory but that hasn’t really any problem for me until my file listing was reversed.
WHAT CAN I DO TO CHANGE IT BACK TO ARRANGED BY NAME AND IN ORDER A TO Z.

To sort a list view Finder window, click on the column title, such as "Name" or "Date Modified." Clicking on the same title a second time, will reverse the order. So Click on "Name" a second time. Look for the little triangle to the right of Name to see the direction of the sort -- up or down.
Gary,
Thanks a bunch. It works just like you state that it will, but I still wonder why that the "arrange by" is greyed out in the "View" catagory in Finder?????? Maybe you can help me make the change necessary to make "arrange by" available. Thanks again you are always a great help.

Check your view options (View, Show View Options) for that window. See if something like "Keep Arranged By" is selected. It is different in 10.6, so I'm not sure what to look for. But on older systems, if you selected "Keep Arranged By" then it might deactivate the "Arrange By" menu item.
