Don’t Screenshots Get Named In Sequential Order?

Every time I take a screen shot it is automatically named “untitled 5”. If I take several “untitled 5” always comes up.
I seem to remember that the number would change automatically w/o needing to physically change the sequence number, even days apart if the screen shot wasn’t renamed.
Is there a new setting I am not seeing to remedy this?

If you just take a screenshot and have it saved to a file, it gets a name like "Screenshot 2026-03-25 at 8.36.57 AM."

But I'm guessing you have it set to open directly in Preview instead. Then it creates an unnamed Preview document with a suggested name. If you are getting "Untitled 5" as that suggestion, then I'll bet you have documents using Untitled, Untitled 1 ... Untitled 4 in your iCloud Drive/Preview folder and so it is suggesting "Untitled 5."

So it IS doing it in sequential order for the suggested name. But the idea is for you to name it whatever you like at the time you save it and not keep that suggested name.

If you want to not use Preview but instead just save the file, use Shift+Command+5 and then use the "Options" button. Set it to a folder location, instead of "Preview."
