Email and MobileMe

I use MobileMe. The email application I use on my iMAC is Entourage. I have organized my inbox into multiple folders. I understand that my email is based on IMAP. How do I ensure that I actually have copies of all of the emails/folders that show up in my Entourage on my desktop. Are these just saved somewhere in the “cloud” with Apple’s MobileMe service? I want to ensure I have a backup of my emails.

Well, with IMAP it is technically all in the cloud, you are right. You do have a temporary cache of email locally, but nothing as reliable as a backup.
The truth is that "the cloud" is probably much more reliable than any backup you have. It isn't 100% reliable, but neither would a local backup.
It has been a few versions since I have used Entourage, but I imagine there is still an archiving feature, maybe? Then you could save your mailboxes out to a backup every week or month?

Thank you for your reply. I have just switched over to the mail application that comes with iMAC called "Mail." My understanding is that once I open Mail to check my emails via MobileMe, then they actually get downloaded to my computer (and remain on the server because of IMAP system). And because I am also doing regular Time Machine backups, then I should be ok. Is this correct?

Copies of messages are created locally, but think of them as a "cache" and not a reliable backup. If you want a real backup of your messages, use the Mailbox, Archive Mailbox functionality every once in a while.

And yes you are correct, time machine backs up your mail.app emails. just open time machine while you are in mail.app
